if a diamond is cut too deep or too shallow, the light that enters the stone will leak out the bottom of the diamond therefore loosing the diamond's brilliance.
When a diamond is cut proportionally, the light that enters the stone is able to reflect internally from facet to facet then reflect back to the eye. This play of light creates a scintillation and fire that gives a diamond it's beauty.
